The aptly titled The ExPerience debut, from Jamaican singer-songwriter Lila Iké, is here. The EP is the first from In.Digg.Nation’s recently inked Six Course-RCA multi-project deal.
Iké, along with mentor and In.Digg.Nation chief, Protoje, led an Instagram listening party to introduce the tracks from the extended play. To the delight of the fans, the vocalist sang, cracked jokes and continuously engaged them throughout the session. The listening party drew several heavy hitters from ‘yaad’ and abroad.
“Big song… big chune,” award-winning music industry maven Swizz Beatz, who dropped into the party and requested I Spy, expressed. The world-renowned record producer later added: “I had to come show love to your family… you showed love to mine.”
“We coming to Jamaica with Verzuz soon,” the beat-maker shared, after Protoje and Iké lauded the series’ recent staging, which featured icons Jill Scott and Erykah Badu.
The Collective’s Sevana, Naomi Cowan and Jaz Elise showed up and showed out to support and celebrate with their stablemate. Koffee, Tessellated, Popcaan and Kabaka Pyramid were among Iké’s music industry colleagues, who joined the listening party, to the delight of the thousands of fans who tuned in to mark the EP’s release.
It was positive vibes all round with displays of love and respect among the artistes. However, the excitement meter jumped when everyone realise ‘trouble deh deh.’
“Wah ah gwaan Proto? You ah di gyal dem toto,” Popcaan – rocking his new clean-cut hairstyle – quipped, when he joined the two-person live, after Koffee exited to make way for him. Hit-making deejays Stylo G and Skillibeng dipped in from Popcaan‘s live to ‘bless up’ Iké‘s project.
Iké was a picture of joy and pride throughout the IG pre-launch party, which beamed from The Habitat studio. The musician’s excited fans were also treated to exclusive tracks from the upcoming projects of Sevana and Protoje.
“Bless up on the stream,” a dapper, suit-clad Tessellated hailed after joining the two-person stream briefly to show he was formally attired for the party. The cameo elicited the moniker ‘Pressellated’ from one fan in the chat.
Iké’s vocal styling is sultry and bold on Solitude, yearning to escape the afflictions of prominence. The singer romp artfully atop relaxed chords with lyrics that bemoan the trappings and oft unwanted attention that accompany being thrust into the spotlight.
“Stream it…,” a pride-filled Protoje urged fans, near the end of the session.
Meanwhile, another standout track, Thy Will, carries an especially uplifting message, encouraging a positive and pure approach to life and living. Then, there’s the arresting Forget Me, a beautifully crafted elegy that emotes the fatalism of an ill-fated love. The arrangement evokes audio elements that paint the layers of a complex love story.
“All the songs will have visuals associated,” Lila Iké assured, explaining that the they will be made available in short order. The 20-odd-year-old songstress closed out the event: “Thank you all so much, love, light and prosperity.”
Projects from Protoje and Sevana are expected from the major label deal inked by In.Digg.Nation soon.
